Scholars
Students who receive scholarships must write an essay explaining their need and how they will contribute to MSJ. What follows are excerpts from some of these essays.
We cannot afford very much so we have to do without many things other families have. We know the value of things we need and I know I need a good education that Mount Saint Joseph will give me.
After my parents got a divorce, I ended up living in a household with my mother and my brother. Since then, I have seen the strains and burdens it creates on her and our family. While sending us to public school could save us lots of money on tuition...I know this school will put me in a position to succeed now so that I can succeed in life.
Sports at Mount Saint Joseph are different than sports at other schools....no matter what team you are on, everyone gets along and is kind of close, kind of like your second family....there is not a better feeling than being with your best friends.... I have learned that when I am older, it is not the wins and losses that I will remember, but the fun experiences I had while I was on the team.
I am just finishing my first year at MSJ....on the second day Mr Z knew everyone's name. This made me feel like I really belonged. In eighth grade I was in danger of not passing but this year I have received straight B's. I hope that next year we'll see some A's as well.
What I expect from MSJ is a great education and lifelong friends. MSJ offers teachers who actually want to help the students and will stay after school to help them unlike my current school does. The support of teachers that will help me with getting the best education possible is exactly what I need.
It is difficult to write an essay about this subject, because on some level, it is obviously very uncomfortable for me.... For whatever reasons, my father decided to move away, he is available for a few hours many week ends but has little to do with the life of our family on a day to day basis. It seems that the sacrifices we make affect us in every aspect of our lives, every day, from waking in the morning without two parents to say "How are you today?" to going to bed at night without a Dad to say "Good night and I love you." The sacrifices we make to go to MSJ seem more than worth it, because MSJ provides us all with an additional family structure, to support the one my Mom is working very hard to maintain.
What I can contribute to the MSJ community, is support and compassion to those who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, and don't really know what to expect. I can also lend support if they are dealing with alcoholism or living in a broken or abusive home...as I am familiar with these situations.
While at MSJ I want to expand my mind, have fun and get good grades so I can go to college and become a successful and wealthy business man.
I think it has been very difficult on my mom being a single parent raising two children, as I have seen her sacrifice to provide for my sister and I. She has had to work very hard. She works long hours and at times has had to work two jobs....This does not leave much time for her to spend with me.
First I would like to express my gratitude towards you for making it possible for me to carry out my dreams and goals. I am a child of a single parent household and I have experienced how hard it is for my mom to make ends meet and try to keep my brother and I happy. It is very stressful on her and I have great respect for anyone who can pull off the amazing feat of raising 2 kids, not to mention nine, on their own.
My mom believes in me. She knows that I will excel in my learning at MSJ.
